The Best Chicken Coop Building Plans On The Internet

Chicken coops are very simple to make. Chicken coop plans will of course make it a lot easier, but at the end of the day it’s a simple job, especially if you’re already familiar with hammers and nails. This article outlines what you need to think about before building a chicken coop.

To start off, you need to decide on how big your flock is going to be, thus how big of a coop you require. There are essentially 3 sizes here: a portable triangular prism coop, a larger box-shaped coop, or a full blown premium coop with a run. I highly recommend starting off with a medium coop, since you never know how big your flock is going to get, and they’re easily expandable in the future.

Next comes positioning. Most chicken breeds need sunlight to remain in peak laying health. Place the coop away from light blocking trees or walls, and try to position it to get as much morning sunlight as possible. Placing your coop correctly can be the difference between 2 eggs a week and 5 eggs a week.

Research what kind of predators live in your geographical area. You really should build security precautions depending on what wild animals are around. For foxes you should bury a length of wire mesh around the perimeter of your coop to prevent them from digging underneath. There is not a lot you can do about snakes, but it pays to know what the risks are anyway.

Chicken Coop Plans Online

There are plenty of options available when it comes to downloadable building plans. However, some plans are much better quality than others, and will provide you with additional information about different types of chicken coops.

Building a Chicken House at Home

If you are considering building a chicken house at home, this may be simpler to do than you think! The high cost of ready made and flatpacked coops has lead many people to try the DIY option and with good chicken pen plans and some very basic DIY skills, there is no reason why you cannot do the same.

Although it is very true that hens are very adaptable, tolerant birds, you should still ensure that what you build is perfect for your brood as happier hens produce better quality eggs. In addition, a few careful considerations in the planning stage can mean that you avoid all kinds of potential problems in the future.

When building a chicken house, one of the most important things to think about is the size. Once you have decided on the number of hens you would like to keep, you should do a little math. It is recommended that each hen has around 3-5 square feet of space inside the nesting/sleeping area and up to 15 square feet in an outdoor run area. This can be reduced slightly if the hens are to be allowed to free-range a few times a week. As well as floor space, the more height you can allow, the better as although hens do not fly, they like to jump and flap so at least 3ft in height is recommended, but again, if allowed outdoors, this becomes a less important factor.

Another consideration is the fact that hens love to perch and roost. Therefore, any good chicken pen plans should take this into account and provide a formal perched area within the sleeping/nesting quarters. In addition, hens who live in the wild will perch on branches so if the size of your pen allows, you could bring in some old tree branches which are sturdy enough to simply lie on the floor randomly-your hens will love you for it!

Proofing your pen from predators is vital. The lengths that animals such as foxes and raccoons will go to in an attempt to get your hens can be astounding. They have been known to burrow into a pen from outside and spend hours carefully chewing through wire mesh. It is therefore a good idea to take precautions by either digging some mesh into the ground around 6 inches deep around where you site your coop or to consider fastening it on paving but placing hen-friendly ground materials inside, such as soil or turf.

As a chicken keeper and retailer of chicken housing myself, I was looking for ideas to incorporate into my own designs and this lead me to a book by a fellow chicken-lover! His designs were so simple that they were almost as easy to construct as my own self-assembly coops were to put together! I have since recommended his book to numerous customers who were looking at building a chicken house themselves and all have been delighted by both the simplicity and quality of the designs. In addition, it has been shown that building your own housing can save over 50% of the cost of a comparable flatpacked pen and even those with very little experience in DIY can follow simple chicken pen plans without difficulty.

First though, a good chicken nest box must be planned to get the chicken lay eggs in manners that are most productive. The basics are the same. You build a box, put in some straw or wood shavings and when the time comes so too the eggs. But when there is low egg production chances are something must be done to improve the nest box. For as much eggs as possible, here are suggestions:

Often, chicken nest boxes are built to house more chicken and there are practical management reasons for this. The fact though is that when the nest box is crowded, chicken prefer laying eggs on the floor where the eggs are dirtied, trampled on, and even eaten lowering production. Chicken are actually more productive when they nest on smaller boxes. A box that could house four chickens at a time is good. Smaller is better. When nesting boxes are smaller, there is also less room for the chicken to kick around the straw or wood shavings, creating less mess and Raising the straw where they should be.

The roof of the chicken nest boxes are sloped for the purpose that chickens do not roost on the roof. A roof not angled steeply will invite chickens to roost there and when that happens expect where the eggs will be. Inside the nest box, keep at least two inches of straw but if you could have wood shavings (pine is preferable) that is even better.

If you could provide a chute where the eggs will roll after being laid, and collected at a separate place, the added cost of the chute will be paid for in terms of more eggs that could be used. It will also be practical as frequent intrusions disturbs chicken and that destroys eggs in the process let alone the muck that you will help splatter around.

In place of the egg chute, construct the chicken nest box with doors constructed at the backside so that you could collect the eggs from outside the coop without disturbing the chickens very much. Build a lip at the opening to prevent the eggs from falling when the doors open. A two-inch high lip is enough to keep the eggs safe. Likewise, build also a similar lip at the entrance to the nest boxes that serves as a chicken step. This will prevent the eggs from falling from inside the chicken coop as the chicken kicks around before laying more. The lips will also keep the straw inside the nest.

The sizes in building chicken nest boxes vary widely. In general though the height would be about 9″ and if you intend to limit the chickens inside the box, a 12″ square is sufficient and let the nest boxes be cave like, cold and dark.

Building a Poultry House ? Create Ideal Poultry Accommodation by Building Simple Chicken Housing

By building a poultry house you really will be able to provide first class chicken accommodation very simply and easily. How you house hens is pretty important and so to be able to get it right with the minimum of fuss is invaluable and building them a poultry house yourself will majorly reduce the costs and in actual fact provide better quality and value for money.

There is however another choice open to you and that is to buy a readymade coop but, they really are so expensive. We all like to get good value for our hard earned cash and I am not sure that you get this with the readymade option.

The amount of materials used in their construction would be a fraction of the price if you bought them yourself from a DIY store. I can only think that you are paying the manufacturer for the fact that the materials have been pre measured and the timber sawn to size and you have to consider if that is worth the extra cost to you.

The flexibility you have with building your chickens accommodation is a huge bonus, it really should not be under estimated just how valuable that this one aspect is to you. To take the backyard space that you have available to use and to be able to utilise it to your best advantage with your chickens and size of housing in mind is fantastic.

By managing your backyard effectively you can use areas of light and shade to your total advantage by helping to keep the hen house at a comfortable temperature at all times. After all, when you are susceptible to extremes of heat and cold, like your poultry are any help you give them to remain happy and healthy will benefit you too.

There is such an amazing amount of information to help you keep poultry, all easily accessible and readily available at the touch of a button. So many hints and tips, especially in relation to chickens accommodation, what a fantastic tool to be able to use. You can really make sure that your finished coop will be 100% suited to you and your poultrys needs.

Having sourced all the materials that you are going to need from your local DIY store, you can guarantee quality throughout all very economically or dare I say it cheaply. But, just because you are paying a reasonable price does not mean that you forego on any of the durability or quality of your poultry house. In fact, you are in the perfect position to enhance the longevity because you have taken the time over this labour of love.

The satisfaction you will get from building a poultry house for your chickens can only be guessed at, but by my reckoning it will be just about matched by the taste of the first egg from your own hens. Knowing that you will have provided the best chicken living quarters you possibly can, as well as keeping them safe and secure from predators gives you complete peace of mind too.

Building a poultry house is simple and a great deal of fun when you are given the correct information. They are practical, easy to assemble and can save you a fortune.

There are dozens of poultry related websites that claim to offer visitors great poultry house plans, but few sadly seem to offer little more than a single basic design. However one of the bestpoultry house design websites online that has been endorsed by hundreds of chicken breeders and owners worldwide so far contains a wealth of chicken housing data and related information that is well worth reviewing can be found right here: (http://www.chickenhousekit.com)

Clive Anderson started using the Internet in 2005 as a means of sharing knowledge on a few subjects from personal experience and research with the intention of offering readers a better understanding in these areas so that it might enable them to benefit, achieve, create, eliminate or overcome certain challenges or obstacles that may otherwise be holding them back or clouding their vision.

Writing has become a bit of a two pronged sword to coin a phrase. At one end is the reward that comes from being able to offer beneficial assistance, information, expertise, discoveries, and experiences through the expression of writing.

Added to that the overall enjoyment, fulfilment and sense of achievement that can be found in writing the articles.
